Freyja Schommer

Freyja Schommer

Clinical Massage Therapist, NCBTMB

Freyja Schommer is a board-certified clinical massage therapist who brings a collaborative, unhurried approach to every session. Her work centers on persistent musculoskeletal issues, pain management, and deep tissue release — with a philosophy rooted in working with the body rather than against it.

Freyja believes the body is always doing its best to keep us safe. By moving slowly and attentively with the body’s own responses and reflexes, she helps clients find greater ease and freedom in movement, often with lasting results. Her practice is trauma-informed throughout, and she has a particular passion for supporting members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

A graduate of St. Olaf College, Freyja completed her clinical massage training at Northwestern Health Sciences University and holds NCBTMB board certification. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Acupuncture.

L.Ac., DAc.CHM, Dipl.Ac.

Rowan Renee is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist who advocates for an integrative approach to medicine, recognizing that the greatest gains happen when acupuncture happens alongside other interventions such as massage, allopathic medicine, chiropractic, and counseling. In the long run, they endeavor to make this model of care more accessible to those who find it difficult to navigate and receive quality medicine.

Rowan’s clinical passion is supporting patients through mental health challenges and addiction recovery with acupuncture and herbs. Rowan also loves helping patients with sleep trouble, gastrointestinal concerns, chronic pain, and sexual health challenges. Outside the clinic, Rowan is an avid reader, singer, and the proud parent of a sassy calico cat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves inserting very thin, sterile needles into the skin at strategic points in order to treat a variety of conditions. Acupuncturists are also trained in a number of complementary techniques, including tui na, gua sha, clinical application of heat and ice, herbal remedies, cupping, and movement or breathing techniques.

Generally, not at all! Some people experience minor aching, feelings of heaviness, or brief sharp sensations when the needles are inserted — and some feel very little or nothing at all.

Research about acupuncture is robust and growing. Over 13,000 studies have been conducted across 60 countries, with nearly 1,000 systematic reviews summarizing the results. The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that acupuncture can reduce migraine frequency, and a 2018 systematic review found it effective for chronic pain, for example. Those are just a few of thousands of studies that contain promising information about the efficacy of acupuncture for a very wide variety of conditions. We’re happy to help you explore what we know about whether acupuncture might be a good option for your needs.

That depends on a number of variables, including the condition being treated and your own body’s unique constitution. Most of the time, you’ll need a few appointments to notice a difference. At your first appointment, we’ll work with you to create a treatment plan that addresses your unique needs.

When you book an appointment, we’ll send a reminder to wear loose-fitting clothing. When you arrive, you’ll check in and we’ll show you to the private treatment room. We’ll ask lots of questions — not only about the condition you’re being seen for, but about the way your whole body works. We believe in treating the whole person, and understanding your full picture helps us do that well.

Clinical Massage

Both are valuable, but they serve different purposes. Relaxation massage uses long, flowing strokes to calm the nervous system and promote general wellbeing — it’s wonderful for stress relief. Clinical massage, by contrast, is outcome-based. Your therapist begins with an assessment of your specific concerns, then applies targeted techniques to address the underlying issue — whether that’s a movement restriction, chronic pain, or soft tissue injury. The session is guided by your body’s real-time responses, not a fixed routine. Many clients find clinical massage deeply relaxing too, even though that’s not the primary goal.

Results vary from person to person, but many clients experience significant and immediate reductions in pain and improvements in range of motion.

Your massage therapist is trained in techniques for both clinical massage and relaxation massage. Simply book a relaxation treatment if that’s the best way to tend to your health!

You’ll be warmly greeted, and your massage therapist will discuss your needs and collaborate with you to form a treatment plan. The therapist will then leave the room while you undress to your level of comfort. When you’re ready, they’ll return and begin treatment. At all times, you’ll be treated safely and respectfully, and your therapist will uphold a high professional standard of care.
